State College Tours Underway

This autumn, Partners for Youth Opportunity and students are crisscrossing the Triangle and the state to learn more about some of North Carolina’s institutions of higher learning. College tour trips are often conducted during the week and usually are scheduled for Durham Public Schools teacher workdays and early release days.

Students recently took a trip to Appalachian State University in Boone, where PYO summer college intern Shay Kimzey attends. Students toured the ASU campus, met with the student body president and dined at the student atrium. The idea is to make sure our upper-class high school students have the opportunity to discover and explore as much as possible about colleges and universities located in their home state.

PYO on the TrackDosali Reed-Bandele said at ASU, PYO students were “exposed to college culture” and were introduced to the activist side of college life including stops at the Women’s and Multicultural Centers.

Other college tours scheduled for November include N.C. Central University, East Carolina University and UNC-Chapel Hill where students will sit in on a photo-journalism class with several Afghani journalists. If you would like to host a campus tour of your alma mater or are interested in volunteering during a future college visit, please contact Susan McCraw at 919.526.4230 or at [email protected].

Site Visits Give Students Glimpses of Future Internships and Careers

During a recent internship site visit at Democracy North Carolina, students got the opportunity to see how grassroots democracy works. They learned about the importance of “sunshine laws” and how crucial volunteers, like PYO students, are to informing the public about its civic duties. Other recent internship site visits included those to the Durham VOICE community newspaper newsroom and the SEEDS inner-city garden. Upcoming December career site visits include trips to law and architect offices in Durham.

Congratulations…
