Ways you can be a part of PYO

Do you have a desire to connect with PYO that does not fit into one of the categories listed below? If so, please contact us! PYO is looking for volunteers to give presentations, host workshops, and serve on board committees. If you have a skill, expertise, or resource that might benefit our students, let’s talk.

Be a PYO Tutor

PYO is looking for Duke students who want to help 14-18 year old Durham students succeed in high school and move into college. As part of a 4 person team of mentors that move students through the obstacles they face, Duke tutors are often cited as the most important part of PYO programming.

Duke tutors are paired with students based on the subjects students find challenging and that tutors feel comfortable tutoring. This semester we are meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Lyon Park Community Center for 2 sessions from 3:15-4:30 and 4:30-6:00 p.m. We are looking for tutors who can commit one or both days. Transportation will be available from East Campus.
In addition to the application, tutors must attend an orientation and pass a background check.

PYO students come to tutoring ready to work. They take advantage of the time you are donating and you will see the difference in their grades! Easily one of the best things you will do during your years in college…
