Meet Susan Haws

An experienced researcher-educator with a lifelong interest in promoting and facilitating positive youth development, Susan Haws joined the PYO board this past spring.

Haws started her career as a middle school teacher in Donna, Texas, a small agricultural border town on the banks of the Rio Grande. She went on to teach middle-school English in New Orleans and English and ESL at Broughton High School in Raleigh. After observing first-hand the persistent and complex barriers to well-being that her students faced, she found her way to the discipline of public health, which offered compelling and innovative ways to study and address these problems.

Haws earned a Master of Public Health and a PhD in Health Behavior and Health Education from UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. Her research has focused on a variety of topics, including prevention of adolescent health risk behaviors, youth mentoring and adult emotional health.  A Durham citizen since 2005 and fierce advocate for youth, she led a grassroots effort to add a middle school to Central Park School for Children in downtown Durham in 2013 and 2014.
