PYO Participates in Day of Service

This MLK Day, PYO students and staff joined EVOLVE Mentoring mentors and students in a full day of service to promote civic engagement to youth. EVOLVE is a local non-profit organization that prepares students ages 17 to 23 for real life after high school and college graduations by promoting financial literacy, mentoring, health and fitness, social involvement and professional development.
The day began in N.C. Mutual Life’s cafeteria where students received financial literacy information, such as creating and keeping a budget and understanding credit, from N.C. Mutual and EVOLVE representatives. About mid-day, the group moved over to Duke Memorial United Methodist Church’s kitchen and banquet hall where they met celebrity chef Jerome “Chef Rome” Brown, a Rocky Mount, N.C. native, Army veteran and Food Network personality.Chef Brown shared his story of finding food as a career and gave students lessons in making homemade pasta, salads and dressing.

Under Brown’s supervision, students prepared their own meals as teams and donated a majority of the food to Durham’s Urban Ministries. To end the day, as students feasted, they watched the production Lessons of Hayti, a documentary about the past and present of the historic Durham community. Visitors to the event included Mayor Bill Bell and the NAACP’s Rev. Curtis Gatewood.

Students Attend My Brother’s Keeper Summit

A group of Partners for Youth Opportunity’s males attended the city’s My Brother’s Keeper Summit on last Saturday morning.

The summit, attended by a couple of hundred people and held at Durham’s Convention Center, focused on the thoughts and needs of the city’s young minority males. The gathering was a part of a continuing series initiated by President Obama’s MBK nationwide challenge for communities to help minority males succeed.
