The Gift of Opportunity

PYO is the sole organization in Durham providing comprehensive, wrap-around services in four core areas for students at risk of drop out from 8th grade through freshman year of college. In the past year, we have tripled the number of students served from across the city and increased the services each student is able to access. We now have 85 students enrolled in our program, up 160% from pre-merger numbers, and are serving students from 14 different Durham schools.

Think about this from a parent’s perspective. Maribel, a single mom of three, first discovered PYO when her eldest daughter Michelle needed tutoring. Michelle, a high school sophomore at the time, was a good student behaviorally but struggled to keep her grades up. After connecting with PYO, Michelle’s grades improved substantially. She is now graduating from Wake Tech. Maribel also realized how much her son Antonio could also benefit from our services. At the time, college was the furthest thing from his mind. “Once he got in the program, all he talked about was college,” she said. He is now a freshman at ECU.

Maribel praises PYO’s scholarship program and how it helps students go to college with monetary support. “PYO has been a blessing,” she said. She has recruited her children’s cousins and her kids themselves have recruited several friends to join. “I know everybody – parents, staff and all people involved,” she said. “I will always tell people about PYO.”

Even as we have grown exponentially, Maribel said she doesn’t think that growth has changed the family atmosphere of the program. “I can pick up the phone and call anybody there for support,” she said.

Through stories like Maribel’s, we see a multigenerational pattern of poverty and disparities disappear – replaced instead by opportunity, hope and first-generation college attendees who believe in their own ability to succeed.

The success of our students is easy to measure: 100% of our students are promoted to the next grade. 100% of our graduating seniors are pursuing secondary education in the fall. We are leveling the playing field for students from low-resource families across Durham to be successful.

We offer students the unique opportunity to connect with community leaders and influencers. They are increasing their personal, academic and professional resilience through opportunities to engage in and contribute to their community. To learn more about our work, please read our 2015 Annual Report.

We thrive because of our community. We are supported by individuals, foundations, congregations, corporations and through partnerships with local businesses. This year our devoted board of directors has agreed to match up to $25,000 in donations to our annual giving campaign. We have already raised $12,000 towards meeting this goal.

Help us demonstrate how supporting PYO directly impacts the future of our community’s youth. Your gift of $100 provides a week of workforce development training for a student. $250 provides a semester of books for one of our college freshman. You can donate at any level here.

Thanks so much and happy holidays from our staff, board and families,
