Yusuf Saves

Meet Yusuf…

Imagine being a 16-year-old rising junior in high school with dreams of going to college to study your dream occupation — sports medicine. Now imagine that by your senior year you have to find a way to pay for that dream with very little money…

When Yusuf came to PYO he had big dreams for his future but was unsure of how to reach them. After joining the youth organization and going through summer workforce training he landed his first professional internship with the community news publication, The Durham VOICE.

Yusuf worked hard for a year interviewing people, writing their stories and taking their pictures. He learned the importance of a free and open press to his community and the power that journalism has to change lives. His stories included the most recent Million Man March, continuing adult education and even a family-owned grocery store on Ocracoke Island.

Each pay period he would save 80% of his stipend, choosing to forego the latest stylish sneakers to further fund his education debt free.

Fast forward to his first summer home from studies at the University of North Carolina Pembroke. Yusuf decided to work another internship through PYO, this time with the Helius Foundation — a Durham-based mentoring organization for small businesses and necessity-driven entrepreneurs — writing blog posts and helping with communications. His supervisor, Geraud Staton was impressed with his job performance.

“I was very happy with his professionalism,” Staton said. “He has great potential and is a very good worker. I’d take him back in a heartbeat.”

The entire time Yusuf has worked, he’s saved 80% of his stipend to a total of $1,400!

Typical in-state tuition for North Carolina schools is about $17,000 per year. Help Yusuf get closer to his ultimate goal with the 2017 1:1 Fund Back to School Campaign.
